Laurel Johnson–Book Reviews  Contributing Writer

Laurel Johnson grew up in Marysville KS.  She attended nursing school in Kansas City KS and worked as a Registered Nurse for more than 40 years in rural hospitals, home health, and long term care.  Her years as a home health nurse in the mountains of Kentucky provided many happy memories.  Laurel’s husband, Ron, was born and raised in Jackson County, Kentucky.  Throughout their 44 year marriage they split their time living between Kansas and Kentucky.
Laurel’s activities are usually related to public service of some sort.  In Kentucky, she was Secretary to the Governor’s Task Force on Alzheimer’s.  In Kansas, she taught public CPR classes for years.  For several years she served as an online creative writing mentor to at-risk students in South Dakota as part of a pilot program.  And after retirement she provided volunteer trouble shooting in the areas of long term care nursing documentation and State/Federal guidelines.
Laurel began writing decades ago but her first book was not published until 2001.  Her published work includes:
The Grass Dance — non fiction — published in 2001
The Alley of Wishes — fiction — published in 2003, nominated for the Faulkner Award in American Fiction
Color of Laughter, Color of Tears — poetry — published in 2004 but no longer available, publisher out of business
My Name is Esther Clara — creative non-fiction — published in 2005, nominated for Kansas Notable Book Award
Earth Song — poetry/prose/photographs, non-fiction — published in 2007
A short story was published in Cup of Comfort for Nurses in 2005.
Ask a Reviewer was co written with another reviewer for Amazon download e-books in 2006.
Various poems have been featured in Bellowing Ark, a hard copy journal, and online at The Time Garden.
Laurel has contributed book reviews to Midwest Book Review, Small Press Review, Shadow Poetry Quill Quarterly, and Amazon.
She’s semi-retired from reviewing but still does an occasional review when time allows.  The Muse rarely whispers in her ear nowadays so her creative writing is on hold.  She feeds her creativity by crafting pages on various topics at

She dabbles at photography, reads, and enjoys nature on the small acreage she shares with her husband and their cats.
