A TRIBUTE TO JOHN LENNON—A TRUE LEGEND IN HISTORY FOR ALL

Saturday, October 9, marked the 70th birthday of John Lennon; the singer-songwriter and former Beatle. John Lennon died on December 8, 1980. He was shot by Mark David Chapman outside of his Dakota apartment building, in New York City. It’s never too late to remember a legend that brought so much to the music industry. John showed enthusiasm and power with every song he performed. When he hit the stage it was as though magic appeared right before your very eyes.

Lennon soared to eternal fame as a founding member of the Beatles and, along with Paul McCartney, formed arguably the most successful songwriting partnership in music history. {Paul attended a LOVE Tribute in Las Vegas where John Lennon was honored for his achievements in music.}
People all over the world are honoring John Lennon with special “happy birthday” greetings, many found on You Tube.

HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY TO JOHN LENNON

After the Beatles broke up, in 1970, Lennon moved to New York City in 1971, where he became a leading voice in the Vietnam War protests. He left the music business in 1975 to spend more time with his wife Yoko Ono and newborn son, Sean.
John Lennon was murdered just three weeks after the release of his comeback album Double Fantasy, in 1980.

Malcom McLaren Dead at 64

Malcolm McLaren, one of the most controversial figures in punk rock history, is dead at the age of 64. The impresario, who dabbled in a wide variety of cultural pursuits throughout his life and career — but remains best known for putting the Sex Pistols together and managing them until their 1978 implosion — died today of mesothelioma (a rare form of cancer) at a hospital in Switzerland.
A British art student equally inspired by early rock n’ roll and the French Situationist movement, McLaren initially made his mark on pop culture in 1971, when he opened the “teddy boy” shop Let It Rock on London’s Kings Road with designer and partner Vivienne Westwood. He would change the shop’s name and style several times over the next few years, most notoriously to SEX, which stocked S&M fashions and paraphernalia, and employed many young musicians who would eventually become integral parts of the burgeoning British punk movement.
While on a business trip to New York City, McLaren struck up a relationship with the New York Dolls, first providing them with stage outfits and then, in their waning months, becoming their manager. When his attempts to improve their fortunes by putting them in “provocative” red leather outfits with Communist motifs didn’t pan out, he returned to England and set about putting together a British band that would combine the punk style he nicked from NYC musicians like Richard Hell and the attitude of the British underclasses. That band, of course, was the Sex Pistols.
How much McLaren ultimately had to do with the rise and demise of the Pistols remains subject to endless debate. While McLaren’s innate ability to stir up public controversy certainly helped the band gain fame, the endless negative publicity that surrounded the band just as certainly took its toll. A self-promoter to the end, McLaren went to his grave claiming that the Sex Pistols were merely his puppets, and that he’d planned out their entire career trajectory from the get-go — a claim he tried to back up with the 1980 mockumentary The Great Rock n’ Roll Swindle. John “Johnny Rotten” Lydon and the other surviving members of the band, on the other hand, have always insisted that they were the real creative force behind the Sex Pistols.

After the Pistols broke up, McLaren managed both Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow, before embarking on a solo recording career of his own that would “borrow” bits of everything from African music, funk and early hip-hop to opera, classical and electronic. (“Stealing things is a glorious occupation, particularly in the art world,” he once said.) In recent years, he was involved in a number of radio, television and film projects, including co-produing the 2006 film Fast Food Nation.
Though he was an abrasive, self-involved character who rubbed quite a few people the wrong way, there’s no question that McLaren — and his various stunts like having the Pistols play on a Thames barge during the Queen’s Jubilee, or having Bow Wow Wow’s underage nymphet Annabella Lwin pose provocatively on the band’s album covers — left a permanent mark on modern music and pop culture. Working in a creative field that has often been woefully devoid of actual creativity, McLaren was a full-on “idea man” who never tired of attempting to subvert the way we experience and relate to music. And this world could definitely use a few more Malcolm McLarens.
“For me Malc was always entertaining,” said Lydon in a statement released this afternoon, “and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.”
