MAURICES STORE SUPPORTS RESCUES & RUNAWAYS

WITH OUTDOOR FASHION SHOW AND SILENT AUCTION

SATURDAY OCTOBER 9TH AT THE SALINA KS CENTRAL MALL PARKING AREA


Maurices Department Store at the Salina Kansas Central Mall is hosting a Rescues & Runways outdoor fashion show at 3 p.m. Saturday October 9th in the parking lot area grounds {where the old Verizon building had been}.

The fashion show will feature several models walking the runway wearing the latest fall looks from Maurices. Representatives of the Salina Animal Shelter will be on hand to answer questions from people about adopting pets and also volunteering at the shelter.  There is a Silent Auction at 1:30 p.m to help raise funds for the shelter.

The Salina, Kansas store is one of more than 700 Maurices stores in 44 states that will host pet-themed fashion shows and sponsor a fund-raiser event to support their local shelters.  This is truly a wonderful time to get outdoors to see what Maurices has to offer for the fall season and also help support the animal shelter!  These loving pets need to find good homes.  They need people like you to show them support!  Think of the lives you will be saving, and YOU can make a big difference for them!

Packages for the silent auction have been collected from various businesses in the area to show their support for the Salina Animal Shelter.  Some of these packages are worth over $200 as stated by one of the Maurices store employees.  “We wanted to make sure the packages were going to do well with the silent auction because of the worthy cause” said one employee.  “There are all sorts of baskets to bid on at the silent auction including one for romance.”

Afresh Entertainment Magazine staff photographer and writer Anne Shiever of Salina KS will also be taking photos of the event to send to Maurices headquarters as well as interviewing the public for another follow-up story!  The animal shelter will also be on the scene with some of the wonderful pets.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions to find out how you can help the shelter!

Maurices also is introducing a limited edition Friends for Life Charm. The Friends for Life charm is $5 and will be sold through Oct. 31. For every charm purchased, $2.50 will go to support the ASPCA and its national shelter outreach program.

Why:  Our purpose is to do something about the continuing hunger problem that ranks Oklahoma high in the nation for the percentage of people that need assistance just to eat. We currently feed over 60,000 people a week out of the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma. Of those, nearly 40% are children, we need to fix this.

How:  Drummers helping fill the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.  So they can continue their work to eliminate food insecurity and hunger in our area.  Each drummer needs to bring 10 cans of food, with 100% of donations going to the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.

If there are more than 582 drummers playing together at the same time here in Tulsa, we could break a world record currently held by “Drumfest” in England.

BENEFITS PLANNED, DONATIONS SOUGHT

Blind Pig recording artist Robin Rogers, who was admitted to the hospital on August 18th with serious liver problems, has now been diagnosed with liver cancer.  She was hospitalized for complications caused by Hepatitis C, and a CT scan prior to surgery revealed an untreatable cancerous tumor on her liver.  She is not a candidate for a liver transplant so she has been sent home for hospice care.
There has been a major outpouring of support and care since the announcement of the hospitalization by her husband Tony on Robin’s Facebook page.  Announcements were made of the establishment of a Robin Rogers Medical Trust Fund to cover medical expenses.
However, while this fund will help with astronomical hospital and medical bills, it does not cover other expenses such as hospice care and and basic living expenses.  Robin will not be able to return to the stage, and Tony, her musical partner, will be out of work for the foreseeable future.  Like most musicians, Robin and Tony do not have health insurance and depend on touring income for their livelihood.  Expenses for hospice care, medicine, and everyday living will be extremely high.

A benefit and silent auction being organized by producer Jim Brock and friend Scott Cable will be held at the Double Door Inn in Charlotte, North Carolina on October 24th. The day long event will feature performances by Jim Brock, Bob Margolin, the Voodoo Brothers, WSNB, and special guest Sheila Carlisle.
Tickets are only $20.  For further information on starting times or to donate items for the auction, please see the Facebook Benefit page referenced above.  An earlier benefit will also be held at the Double Door, on September 26th, featuring the Cary Sims Trio, Part-Time Blues Band, House on Fire & Monday Night All -Stars.
Rogers is an accomplished singer and talented harmonica player who has emerged over the past few years as a major player in the blues world.  Following the release of her national debut CD, Treat Me Right, she won the 2009 Blues Blast Award for “Best Female Artist.”   Her new CD, Back In The Fire, will be released on September 14th.
