Interview with Steven Kvinlaug

Ch.L.: Country Music has many new fans in Europe, who may be hearing about you for the first time. How would you describe yourself and the music you play to someone who’se never seen or heard you before.

S.K.: I have been around since mid 70’s I did alot of touring over in the US, played with best of them,Im still making music, now here in Norway, and wanting to branch out into the Europe scene
I raised a family and now want to get back out on the road. My daughter is now getting settled in the music business and has just finished a cd project.

Ch.L.: How was the last year for you? What were the highlights?

S.K.: The last year has been pretty good.. I’ve been touring a lot in Norway and times are good.. The festivals have been fun.. Laksefestivalen in Flekkefjord..Frolandfesivalen in Arendal.. More coming up.

Ch.L.: What’s your latest CD and how’s it doing?

S.K.: My latest CD is called Best Time of my Life and it did ok up to now and will soon be re-released on a new label called MTG here in Norway along with my older albums and maybe a “Best of”

Ch.L.: How did you choose the title for the CD, is there a story behind it?

S.K.: The best time of my life is about looking for something you had with you all along..memories from the past where we go to be empowered..but sometimes we have to leave to see home for what it is..

My good friend Andreas, who I collaberated with writing this song died in a motorcycycle accident right before the CD was released so he never got to hear it.. and hearing it always makes me remember him..

Ch.L.: Do you write the songs yourself and if not, how do you go about finding the songs for the your CD?

S.K.: I mainly write all the songs on my albums, alone and with other people..and I mainly put words to thoughts, ideas and lessons from my life, Sometimes learned “The hard way”

Ch.L.: Please tell us about the songs on your album.

S.K.: This is what I wrote in the CD cover for each song..
1.Best time of my life- is about where I really started out on my own..A time of fond memories where I can go back in my mind and charge my batteries when I need to..Places, people hopes and dreams.. They were all there.. They still are..

2. Roll with the Punches- is about getting back on the horse, so to speak..and never giving up..Hopes and dreams are the key..The pain we endure through hard times, failure, love, loss and whatever, builds us or breaks us..It makes us who we are..My life has taught me that the worse things that happen usually turn out to be the best..One door closes and another opens.. I try to remember that God has promised never to try us more than we can take..Sometimes it’s hard to believe anything..

3. I Wonder was my sons attempt to write a song to a friend that died in a tragic accident. He had a lot of questions he couldn’t find the answers to..I didn’t have them either. John, my friend and co-writer on several songs and myself, helped him to get it all down on papar. I think that questions are much more important than answers..If you understand a question, the answer is in that understanding and will give you a couple of new questions.. Thats how we learn and grow..Many people nowadays just want answers served up like fast food..What value does an answer have if you don’t understand the question?I think that’s why Jesus so often spoke in parables.. That was 2000 years ago..Maybe we haven’t evolved as much as we think..

4. Can’t smell the flowers is about seizing the day..I believe that the only realvalue in life is what we mean to eachother..Life has us running from one thing to another all day just to fit in..And for what? A good pension?A bigger nicer house that keeps you running even moe?We often don’t have the timeto think about how meaningless our excistences can get..but we feel it just the same. It’s right at this moment we can make a difference..Not yesterday or tomorrow. Routine is a killer..It steals your life..It keeps you doing things mindlessly over and over again and telling yourself how important it is.. No real choices and no real perspective..You don’t ask why.. You dont have time.. That used to be me.. no more..

5.You got a friend..is to all my friendswho always seem to be there..Most people think of a good friend as someone they see several times a week and do stuff with o a regular basis.. For me afriend is someone I bump into, get a call from if they need meor drop in if I need them….maybe just to kill some time.. No ice to break even if I haven’t seen them for months..

6.Time Flies is dedicated to my father.. It’s written at a time when I was learning the hard facts of life..3 kids, a mortgagethat seemed like a monster, long hours at work and no time to think or breathe..It made me appreciate my father even more.. He had a rougher time than me..The courage and faithhe passed on to me just by being himself, has carried me many times..He’s gone now, but he lives on in my heart..

7.The first time tonight..What can I say? Who hasn’t found true love the day or week after they lost it..

Music brings people all ages together, and sometimes people call it the center to the soul for “WHEN WORDS SPEAK IN A WHISPER, MUSIC SPEAKS LOUD AND PROUD!!!”
