RICKY FUGITT

Afresh: What is your name, and name your group/band/act?  RICKY FUGITT

Afresh: Where are the artists from?  What is their talent in the group?  GREAT BEND, KS    LEAD SINGER/RHYTHM GUITAR

Afresh: How did the band get the name?  NO BAND NAME     JUST RICKY FUGITT

Afresh: What instrument do you play now? (If applicable)

Afresh: What (who) does your act/art consist of?  COUNTRY/TEXAS/RED DIRT MUSIC

Afresh: How would you describe your music/art/entertainment for the public audience if they have never seen you before?  WE HAVE A LITTLE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, BUT WE MAINLY LIKE TO PLAY MUSIC WITH A LITTLE ATTITUDE AND SONGS THAT HAVE MEANING….NOT JUST A CATCHY LEAD LICK.

Afresh:  If you had to describe your music in three or four words, what would you call it? RED DIRT/TEXAS/COUNTRY

Afresh: Give me some details about the group/act/art?  I HAVE BEEN PERFORMING FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW.  GOT ME FIRST BIG RADIO BREAK IN 2008 ON STATIONS DOWN IN TX.  IT WAS THEN THAT I RELEASED MY FIRST RADIO SINGLE CALLED RED DIRT MUSIC AND BECAME A MEMBER OF THE ACADEMY OF TEXAS MUSIC.

Afresh: What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?) LIFE…WHAT I HAVE LIVED…THERE ISN’T ANY MADE UP STORIES IN WHAT WE DO…THERE IS AN EXPERIENCE…GOOD OR BAD BEHIND EVERY ONE.

Afresh: How long have you been performing live or making art?  OVER 20 YEARS NOW…..NOT WITH THE SAME GUYS IN THE BAND BUT AS A SOLO ARTIST OVER 20 YEARS…SOME OF WHICH WAS STRICTLY ACOUSTIC TOURS.

Afresh:  If you had to categorize your music, what genre would it best fit?  (Name up to three) TEXAS/RED DIRT/ COUNTRY

Afresh:  What do you feel distinguishes “an artist” from just a musician? THE ABILITY TO SAY WHAT OTHERS THINK BUT CAN’T PUT INTO WORDS….I FEEL NOT ONLY A SINGER CAN DO THIS BUT A TRUE MUSICIAN CALL TELL A STORY ON THEIR INSTRUMENT AS WELL WITHOUT ANY LYRICS AT ALL.

Afresh: Where did you meet your group and how long have you been together now?  MY NEW BAND HAS BEEN TOGETHER FOR ONLY A FEW MONTHS NOW…WE ARE SPREAD OVER KS AND OKLAHOMA.  WE KINDA FOUND EACH OTHER ONLINE! LOL BUT SO FAR IT’S A GREAT FIT.

Afresh: What are your immediate music career goals? (Next 1 to 3 years.) MY MAIN GOAL IS TO SIMPLY STILL BE A PART OF THE BUSINESS IN 1-3 YEARS…THIS IS A TOUGH BUSINESS.  IT’S ALL ABOUT MOMENTUM AND USING THAT MOMENTUM TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.  IF YOU PLAY MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT REASONS I THINK YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO STAY AROUND AS LONG AS YOU WANT TO DO SO.

Afresh: What has been the biggest challenge for you or the group? PROBABLY JUST GETTING DISCOVERED….AND BY THAT I JUST MEAN HAVING PEOPLE THAT KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND DIG WHAT YOU ARE DOING.  THE RADIO BREAK IN 2008 REALLY PROPELLED ME AS AN ARTIST AND SONGWRITER.

Afresh: You’ve heard of the term “starving artists” before, how do you cope with major obstacles?  OBSTACLES ARE GOING TO BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT…WHETHER YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST OR NATIONAL ARTIST, IT’S THAT SIMPLE.  SO TAKE EM ON THE CHIN AND MAKE IT WORK FOR YOU….IF THOSE OBSTACLES GET YOU DOWN….YOU JUST WRITE A #1 HIT ABOUT EM…IT ALL COMES CIRCLE IN THE END.

Afresh:  Do you feel the economic crunch has hurt the industry, or do you have some other promotional tips to help support your music?  I HAVE BEEN DOING LOTS OF ACOUSTIC SHOWS FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS AND IT REALLY HASN’T EFFECTED WHAT IT DO.  THERE IS ALWAYS A LITTLE DIVE BAR OR TAVERN SOMEWHERE WITH PATRONS IN IT THAT WANT TO HEAR TRUE MUSIC.  THAT’S MY JOB.

Afresh:  Who is your fan/customer?  Do you have a fan club or street team? I DO NOT HAVE EITHER…IT’S HARD ENOUGH KEEPING UP WITH MYSELF..LOL .  I DO HAVE PEOPLE THAT ARE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR ME AND PROMOTING MY MUSIC…I CALL EM MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

Afresh: Art & Music has an impact on both young and old.  Everyone loves a celebrity, so what advice do you have for the youth of today? I DON’T LIKE STEERING TOWARD THE CELEBRITY CARD…..IN LIFE YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.  IT REALLY IS THAT SIMPLE.  MUSIC DOES THAT FOR ME.  I DON’T WANT TO BE RICH AND FAMOUS…JUST WANT TO MAKE A LIVING DOING WHAT I LOVE.

Afresh: What does your family think of your performance and do they support you?  I HAVE TONS OF SUPPORT FROM MY FAMILY…WITHOUT THEM, I COULDN’T DO THIS.  I ALWAYS STRIVE TO MAKE THE PROUD BEFORE ANY OTHER.

Afresh: What is your stance on how to get the public to support “live music” and see the shows?  Any ideas???  I TELL YA…THIS IS WHY I LIKE THE TEXAS MUSIC SCENE SO MUCH…LIVE MUSIC IS EVERYWHERE! AND IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A CERTAIN GENRE…GOOD MUSIC IS GOOD MUSIC.  I PERSONALLY THINK LIVE MUSIC IS THE BEST MUSIC…IT GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO SEE HOW PEOPLE WARM UP TO YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND MAKES YOU CONTINUALLY STRIVE TO BE DIFFERENT AND BETTER.  AS FOR THE AUDIENCES…IF YOU GO TO A LIVE SHOW THAT HAS A GREAT ARTIST PERFORMING IN FRONT OF YOU AND TELLING THE STORIES THAT GOT HIM OR HER THERE…YOU WILL BE HOOKED! I PROMISE.

Afresh: Thinking back, did your family carry on the same musical/artistic interests?  NOPE. NOT AT ALL.  MY DAD FORCED ME INTO GUITAR WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND I HATED IT.  MY MOM SANG TO ME AS A BABY SO MAYBE THAT’S WHERE I GOT IT.  IT WASN’T UNTIL HIGH SCHOOL I DECIDED I LIKED TO SING…AND MAYBE IT WASN’T A BAD IDEA TO GIVE THAT GUITAR ANOTHER CHANCE.  THANKS DAD!

Afresh: Do you have your own favorite type of music and is it any different from what you play now?  ALL DEPENDS ON MY MOOD.  I’M A COUNTRY BOY FIRST…BUT I AM COWBOY SECOND AND SOMETIMES WE LIKE TO ROCK IT UP A BIT!

Afresh: Do you have other interests or talents you would like to share with us? HMMM LOL….I AM A MAN OF ALL TRADES.

Afresh: What has been your strong influence to continue performing? WHEN PEOPLE THINK I AM WASTENG MY TIME AND DON’T BELIEVE IN WHAT I AM DOING.  THAT IN IT’S SELF MAKES ME WORK HARD TO MAKE SURE I PROVE THEM WRONG.  IF IT WAS EASY EVERYONE WOULD BE DOING IT.

Afresh: How do you rate your live performance ability?  Do you feel better performing live or in the studio? DEFINITELY LIVE!! I HATE THE STUDIO…WAY TO FORMAL IN THERE. HAHA.  I LOVE INTERACTING WITH THE CROUD AND GETTING CRAZY!

Afresh: Does anyone in particular influence your artistic/musical talent? LOT’S OF INFLUENCES.  GEORGE STRAIT, CHRIS LEDOUX AND GOOD OLD GARTH STARTED THIS DEAL. BUT MORE RECENTLY, TEXAS ACTS SUCH AS JASON BOLAND, KEVIN FOWLER AND JACKSON TAYLOR HAS ALSO BECOME A PART OF MY COWBOY WAYS.

Afresh: Who does most of the song writing/art/literature? (Discuss the songwriting process in detail.) I HAVE DONE ALL THE WRITING SO FAR.  IT’S NOT THAT I AM STUCK UP OR WHATEVER BUT FOR ME IT’S ALL ABOUT A MOOD.  I AM NOT VERY GOOD AT TAKING SOMEONE ELSE’S LYRICS AND SINGING THEM….BECAUSE I DON’T HAVE THE FEELING OF WHERE IT CAME FROM INSIDE.  WHEN I WRITE MY MATERIAL IS IS FROM AN EXPERIENCE.  WHETHER IT BE LONG AGO OR THAT DAY.  SONGS USUALLY COME OUT WHEN I AM ALONE AND HAVE THE HELP OF A BOTTLE TO LOOSEN ME UP A LITTLE.  I HAVE A REALLY HARD TIME COMING BACK TO A SONG AND TRYING TO FINISH IT AT A LATER TIME…BECAUSE I SIMPLY AM NOT IN THE MOOD ANYMORE.  SO WHEN I START WRITING SOMETHING MY HEART IS IN DON’T BUG ME! HAHAHA

Afresh:  What image do you think your music conveys and why did you choose this type of image for your music?           ( Please, do not avoid the image issue!  We want the fans to get to know you better.)  I’M A HONKY TONKIN’ EX RODEO COWBOY…THAT’S WHAT I WANT MY SONGS TO REFLECT WHEN I DO A LIVE SHOW.  I LIKE TO GET ROWDY AND THEN WHEN IT’S TIME I LIKE TO SIT ON MY STOOL JUST ME AND MY GUITAR AND LET YOU SEE WHAT ELSE IS ON THE INSIDE. STORIES OF A MAN THAT HAS BEEN THROUGH EVERY WORD I AM SINGING.  IF YOU HEAR ME SING THE SONGS I WRITE….YOU WILL KNOW EXACTLY WHO I AM.  AND THAT’S THE WAY I LIKE IT.

Afresh:  Someone once said write what you would want to perform over and over.  With that in mind, what song do you love to perform the most?  MY SONG CALLED “THE WAY I AM”  OR  “ANOTHER COUNTRY SONG”  I NEVER GET SICK OF THOSE.  ONE REALLY IS JUST FOR THE TEMPO..IT MAKES YA FEEL GOOD AND THE OTHER IS LYRICS….IT’S JUST THE WAY I AM AND THAT’S THE TRUTH.

Afresh: If you had to change one thing about your music/group what do you feel would be the best change to benefit the group overall and why? I DON’T WANT TO CHANGE ANYTHING….CHANGE IS NOT A GOOD WORD BECAUSE THERE IS A REASON I HAVE MADE IT THIS FAR.  I WOULD HOWEVER LIKE TO EVOLVE AS A BETTER SONGWRITER, MUSICIAN AND ARTIST.

Afresh:  Where would you like to see yourself within the next five years as an artist?  What are your long-term career goals? BESIDES STILL BEING ABLE TO DO THIS….I WOULD DEFINITELY LIKE TO BE GETTING INTO SOME BIGGER VENUES AND ALWAYS HOPE TO GET MORE RADIO STATIONS ON BOARD WITH MY MUSIC.  WOULDN’T MIND DOING SOME RODEO TOURS AS WELL….MAYBE PLAY CHEYENNE ONE DAY OR VEGAS.

Afresh: Have you ever had any strange or stalker type fans that you are aware of?  How does it affect the closeness you have with your fans, media, etc. now?  YEA…YOU GET THOSE. HELL I PROBABLY HAD SOME OF MY IDOLS THINK I WAS THAT WAY!  I THINK LOTS OF PEOPLE JUST GET EXCITED WHEN THEY ARE ABLE TO GET UP AND PERSONAL WITH SOMEONE THAT THEY ARE A FAN OF.  YOU CAN LET THAT CHANGE HOW YOU DO YOUR SHOWS OR HOW YOU ACT WITH ANYONE.  I AM HOWEVER MORE CONCIOUS OF WHAT PERSONAL INFO I TALK ABOUT OR POST.  (FAMILY WISE)

Afresh: While getting ready to perform have you ever been interrupted by fans who tried to sneak in to the dressing room/rehearsal?  How did you handle this? OH YOU ALWAYS HAVE SOMEONE WANTING TO JUMP ON STAGE AND WHAT NOT BUT YOU KNOW…I WAS THERE DOING THE SAME THING ONCE SO I JUST TAKE IT AS IT COMES.  KINDA MAKES A GUY FEEL GOOD THAT THEY ARE WILLING TO DO CRAZY STUFF LIKE THAT JUST TO MEET YOU.

Afresh: Tell us about your most embarrassing moment if you care to share it with us? I DON’T HAVE A ONE THING….BUT FOR ME, FORGETTING MY OWN LYRICS HAS TO BE HE WORST!  WHEN YOU HAVEN’T DONE A SONG IN FOR YEARS IT HAPPENS!

Afresh: What has been the most bizarre thing (thrown) on the stage with you?  How did you react?  BOTTLE OF WHISKEY….I DRANK SOME.

Afresh: What is your wildest story with the group?  OOOOOHHHH.  I DON’T EVEN HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GO INTO MY OLD BAND DAYS AND I AM SURE MY WIFE WILL APPRECIATE THAT.

Afresh: What has been the worst nightmare for the group?  How did you get through it all?  HAVEN’’T REALLY HAD ONE…..I PERSONALLY HAVE HAD TO DEAL WITH LOSS OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND THAT IS REALLY HARD TO KEEP A HAPPY FACE ON TO THE PUBLIC.  BUT SOMEHOW YOU DIG DEEP AND PUT ON THE BEST SHOW YOU CAN, IT’S JUST PART OF THE JOB.

Afresh: What are your up-to-date performance plans?  New releases?  Tours? News?  I AM ABOUT HALFWAY DONE WITH MY LATEST ALBUM I AM RECORDING IN AUSTIN, TX.  I REALLY NEED TO GET THAT WRAPPED UP…I NEED A BACKER!! MONEY IS REALLY TIGHT AND HAVE COME TO A STAND STILL A LITTLE.  I JUST WANT TO GET MY NEW BAND OUT THERE KICK’EN BUT ON THE ROAD.

Afresh: If you could perform with anyone in the world, either dead, alive, or broke-up who would it be? Why? (Name up to three) GEORGE STRAIT (NO EXPLANATION NEEDED)  I WAS A GARTH FAN WHEN HE WAS DOING HIS FIRST FEW ALBUMS….I WOULD LOVE TO GO CRAZY ON A STAGE WITH HIM! THAT WOULD BE A BLAST!  AND MY OTHER WOULD HAVE TO BE CHRIS LEDOUX.  I THINK I MIGHT RELATE TO HIM A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN THE OTHER 2, BUT ONCE AGAIN I THINK A LIVE SHOW WITH HIM WOULD BE AWESOME!!  I THINK JUST GETTING TO SIT ON A BACK PORCH WITH GEORGE WOULD BE THE COOLEST THING.

Afresh: What is the furthest show from your home that you have done?  WELL I LIVE IN GREAT BEND SO AUSTIN, TX IS PROBABLY THE FURTHEST SO FAR.  11 HOURS FOR ME.

Afresh:  How do you feel about file swapping? WHAT’S FILE SWAPPING?

Afresh: Have you been involved in any benefit performances?  What was it and how did you become involved?  OH YES DEFINITELY.  I AM ALWAYS WILLING TO TRY AND HELP..I WILL BE DOING A TOYS FOR TOTS DEAL IN FORT WORTH TEXAS THIS NOVEMBER.  I ESPECIALLY LIKE DONATING MY TIME AND TALENT TO CANCER CAUSES.  IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY SO I HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR THOSE THAT ASK FOR MY HELP WITH THOSE.

Afresh:  How do you think you would like to be remembered by everyone if something were to happen to you suddenly?  I DID IT HOW I WANTED TO….NOT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THOUGHT I SHOULD.

Afresh:  If you had only five minutes on earth to perform one song that could leave a great impact on the world today, what song would you perform and why did you choose this particular piece?  WELL I DON’T THINK THAT I HAVE WRITTEN ANY THAT IS GONNA IMPACT THE WORLD BUT IF I HAD 5 MINUTES LEFT I’D PUT A HONKY TONKIN’ CD IN THE RADIO A PLAY SOMETHING WE COULD ALL DANCE TO!

Afresh:  As an artist, is there anything special you hope to be able to accomplish?  I JUST HOPE I CAN CONTINUE TO MAKE A LIVING DOING WHAT I LOVE, BUT IN A BIGGER PICTURE I WANT TO BE ABLE TO GIVE MY KIDS SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF BY BEING TRUE TO MYSELF AND TO MY MUSIC.  IF ANYTHING ELSE COMES OUT OF THAT I WOULD BE TICKLED TO DEATH.

Afresh:  Thinking back to the very beginning of the band, how do your feel about your performance today and it is much different for you now than when you first started performing. OH MAN….I USED TO BE SO NERVOUS.  NOW I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO STEP OUT ON STAGE AND SHOW EM WHAT I GOT!

Afresh:  When things seem to go negatively at times, how do you turn things into something positive?  THERE IS A REASON FOR EVERYTHING….IF YOU SPEND TO MUCH TIME WANTING AND WANTING YOU FORGET WHAT YOU HAVE.  TIMING IS EVERYTHING AND IF IT’S MEANT TO BE IT WILL BE.

Afresh:  What do you attribute to your “drive as an artist”? ACTUALLY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL.  IT TAUGHT ME TO WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT.  PROVE YOURSELF AND PRACTICE AND THEN YOU GET TO BE IN THE BIG GAME…

Afresh:  As an artist, how would you define SUCCESS? IF YOU ARE HAPPY, YOU ARE SUCCESSFUL.

Afresh:  If you had to think of a slogan that could leave a positive impact for everyone what would your slogan be?  RED DIRT AND RODEO PROUD

Afresh: Do you currently have an agent, endorsement, record label, sponsor, etc.?  SPONSORS INCLUDE…WALKIN M BULLS AND RDRCA (Red Dirt Rodeo Cowboys Assoc.)  I DON’T HAVE ANY OF THE OTHERS…EVERYTHING I DO HAS BEEN BECAUSE I AM BLESSED TO HAVE GOOD PEOPLE AROUND ME.

Afresh: Have you recorded any previous CD’s or posted any audio files on the Internet? (What type of recording process did you use? Who produced your recording?) If you have a current CD released, how long did the process take for you to do from start to finish?  I HAD AN ACOUSTIC CD I SOLD AT MY SHOWS…I PRODUCED AND RECORDED IT MYSELF.  WASN’T ANYTHING FANCY BUT I GOT MY START WITH ONE OF THOSE SONGS.  NOW VALLEJO MUSIC GROUP IN AUSTIN, TX IS PRODUCING MY ALBUM THAT IS IN PROGRESS.  I HAVE RELEASES FROM THE NEW ALBUM ON ITUNES, AMAZON MP3 AND NAPSTER.

Afresh:  Are there any other “behind the scene” secrets, tips, or additional information you would like to share with our readers? AS AN ARTIST, JUST STICK TO YOUR GUNS…AND IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD IT PROBABLY IS.

Afresh: Is this your first on-line interview or do you have some other articles/stories about you posted somewhere for public viewing?  Have you had any previous print or broadcast media exposure or reviews? FIRST ONLINE INTERVIEW….USUALLY I’M IN THE STATION OF ON THE PHONE WITH STATIONS IF I AM NOT CLOSE ENOUGH TO GO INTO THE STUDIO.

Afresh:  Do you have a demo or press kit, (including an Electronic Press Kit …an EPK), or any other promotional materials that you could send to us for a future review also? MORE ABOUT RICKY FUGITT

(News from his home page:  http://rickyfugitt.com/Biography.aspx )

Growing up on music from the likes of George Strait and Chris Ledoux, Fugitt (pronounced Fyoogit) has been a huge fan of country music and all that comes with being a musical artist. From his early band days playing V F W halls to doing acoustic shows at local opry houses, country music is what has defined him.

Ricky put his first band together while attending college and began begging for places to play all his favorite country songs. It was then that he realized that there was more to being an artist than just standing behind a microphone and singing. It was this point in his life when he began exploring writing, although nothing seemed to stand out at the time.

His first big band , named LAST CALL, was based out of Kansas City, and with this experience, Ricky got his first taste of what a band really could be. Ricky began writing of his own experiences that extended from days in the honky tonks to the life of rodeo. Ricky was intrigued by the Texas Music scene and all the atmosphere that surrounded it. If ever there were a point where an artist truly knew where he would fit in, this was it for him.

Ricky got a big break in the summer of 2008 while writing songs to put on his acoustic CDs that he sold at his shows. Ricky wrote a song titled “RED DIRT MUSIC” that was picked up by radio stations throughout Texas and Oklahoma. As he watched his fan base continue to grow, he also had his first sponsor jump on board in 2008. Ranch Style Rodeo Wear Co. based in California has been a great business partner as well as an overall supporter of Ricky Fugitt.

Today Ricky is still playing when and wherever he can. He has begun touring Texas as well as beginning work on his first studio album set to release in 2009.

Music brings people all ages together, and sometimes people call it the center to the soul for “WHEN WORDS SPEAK IN A WHISPER, MUSIC SPEAKS LOUD AND PROUD!!!”
